ATHENS: A massive fire gutted the badminton hall built for the 2004 Athens Olympics late Sunday, causing the roof to collapse. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported following the blaze.
Forty firefighters and 13 vehicles battled the inferno, finally bringing it under control by early Monday. The site is located in a park popular with residents.
Once a temporary 20-million-euro Olympic venue, the hall was later leased for private concerts, hosting major productions like Mamma Mia!.
However, the facility had remained unused for several years. Greece’s highest administrative court ordered its demolition in 2012 due to building regulation violations, and the city confirmed the venue's 20-year lease expired this past April.
