Garbage Heap Collapse Kills Nine At Indian Waste Plant

NEW DELHI: Nine workers were killed last Wednesday when a massive garbage heap collapsed onto an administrative building at the Antony Waste plant near Pune, India. The facility's operator confirmed that incessant monsoon rains destabilized thousands of tonnes of waste from an adjacent landfill, causing the debris to buckle onto the building.

The incident trapped 23 personnel inside the structure. Emergency teams faced significant challenges due to the continuing rainfall, yet they managed to successfully rescue 14 survivors from the rubble.

Consequently, all operations at the waste-to-energy plant have been temporarily suspended pending comprehensive structural and safety assessments.

Building accidents are common during India’s monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, as older structures often fail under prolonged, intense downpours.

Scientists state that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events in India. Furthermore, forecasters warn that the arrival of a potentially powerful El Niño system this year could further shift normal weather patterns across the country.
