Detroit: The Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting the United States and Canada, will officially open to traffic on July 27, marking a major milestone for cross-border trade despite recent criticism and threats from US President Donald Trump.

The six-lane bridge links Detroit, Michigan, with Windsor, Ontario, and is expected to ease congestion at one of North America's busiest trade corridors. It is the first new road crossing between the two countries in the region in more than 60 years.

Trump had recently threatened to block the bridge's opening unless Canada made concessions on trade, but officials from both countries confirmed the project would proceed as scheduled.

Construction began in 2018, with Canada funding most of the project. The bridge is named after Gordie Howe, the Canadian ice hockey legend who spent much of his career with the Detroit Red Wings.
