Abducted Nigerian Pupils and Teachers Rescued After 56 Days

Abuja : Nigerian security forces have rescued dozens of schoolchildren and teachers who were abducted nearly two months ago from schools in the southwestern state of Oyo, ending a 56-day ordeal.

At least 39 pupils and six teachers were freed during an intelligence-led operation involving the military, police and other security agencies. Officials said several kidnappers were killed or arrested during the rescue mission.

The victims were kidnapped on May 15 when armed attackers stormed three schools in Oriire Local Government Area. One teacher was beheaded shortly after the abduction, while the remaining hostages were held captive until their rescue.

The Nigerian Army said the operation was carefully planned to ensure the safe recovery of the hostages, with support from local security groups and vigilantes. The rescued pupils and teachers are receiving medical care before being reunited with their families.

President Bola Tinubu welcomed the rescue and pledged that those responsible for the kidnapping and the killing of the teacher would be brought to justice. The incident was one of several recent mass abductions highlighting Nigeria's ongoing security challenges.
