Manila : At least five people have been killed in a landslide in the northern Philippines as the country's strongest typhoon in decades approached Taiwan, bringing torrential rain, powerful winds and widespread flooding.

The victims were buried when a rain-triggered landslide struck a mountainous area in Benguet province. Rescue teams recovered the bodies and continued searching for any other possible victims.

The typhoon has forced thousands of residents to evacuate vulnerable coastal and flood-prone communities across northern Luzon, while authorities suspended classes, ferry services and some flights as a precaution.

Taiwan has also begun large-scale evacuations, with officials warning that the powerful storm could bring destructive winds, torrential rain and dangerous storm surges when it makes landfall.

Weather agencies have warned that the typhoon could trigger flash floods, landslides and severe disruption across parts of the Philippines and Taiwan over the coming days, prompting emergency services to remain on high alert.
