Trump Dismisses US Election Commission Leaders Ahead of Midterms

Washington: US President Donald Trump has dismissed the remaining members of the bipartisan Election Assistance Commission (EAC), leaving the federal agency without any commissioners just months before the country's midterm elections.
The EAC helps states administer elections, certifies voting systems, accredits testing laboratories and maintains the national voter registration form. One Republican commissioner resigned, while two Democratic commissioners were dismissed by the White House.
The move has drawn criticism from election officials and voting rights advocates, who warned it could disrupt election administration and undermine confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2026 midterms.
The White House has not explained how or when the commission will be reconstituted. The dismissals follow a recent Supreme Court ruling that expanded the president's authority to remove officials from many independent federal agencies.
