Power Returns to Most of Cuba After Nationwide Blackout

Havana : Electricity has been restored to most parts of Cuba after a nationwide blackout left the island without power for hours, marking the third countrywide outage in six months as the nation struggles with a deep economic crisis and fuel shortages.

Power had returned to 10 of Cuba's 15 provinces by Tuesday, but many homes remained without electricity because of low power generation. Authorities said the blackout was caused by voltage instability and reduced electricity output, while the government blamed fuel shortages linked to the US blockade.

The latest outage comes as Cuba continues to enforce lengthy power cuts, with some parts of Havana facing outages lasting more than 30 hours and some rural areas going without electricity for over 70 hours. The country has been relying on ageing power plants that are struggling to operate amid limited fuel supplies.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel accused the United States of using energy restrictions to increase pressure on Cuba, while Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez repeated those claims during a UN debate. Meanwhile, Cubans continue to cope with shortages of food, medicine and drinking water as the country's economic crisis deepens.
