Beijing: On Wednesday, rescue teams continued their search for missing individuals in flood-hit areas of southern China, after Typhoon Maysak caused torrential rain and catastrophic floods, killing at least 17 people and forcing the evacuation of more than 130,000 residents.
The southern Guangxi region was especially hit, with six people killed when rivers overflowed, towns and villages were submerged, and a reservoir dam was breached. Authorities said fast-moving floodwaters breached the banks of over 40 rivers and streams, destroying nearly 13,000 acres of agriculture and interrupting transportation and electricity supplies. Officials have warned that heavy rain is likely to persist in Guangxi and adjoining Guangdong province.
Thousands of emergency professionals have been dispatched to carry out search and rescue operations, evacuate trapped individuals, and provide assistance to affected areas. Temporary shelters have been built up for displaced families, and rescue crews using inflatable boats are still searching flooded areas for missing people.
The storms also hit central China's Hubei province, where strong thunderstorms and tornadoes killed at least 11 people and injured hundreds. Thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed, leaving many residents without power or basic amenities.
