Kaduna, Nigeria : At least nine farmers were killed and several others kidnapped in an attack by armed gangs on a farming community in Nigeria's northwestern Kaduna state, according to a security report and local sources.

The attack took place on Saturday in the Birnin Gwari district, where gunmen opened fire on farmers working in fields near Kakangi village. Local community leaders said the death toll could be as high as 10.

According to security officials and local sources, the assault was carried out in retaliation after farmers reportedly killed a suspected bandit during a failed robbery attempt earlier in the day. The attacker's associates later returned with reinforcements and launched the deadly raid.

Kaduna is among several states in northern Nigeria affected by armed gangs, locally known as bandits, who frequently carry out killings, kidnappings and raids on rural communities. Attacks on farming villages have intensified during the rainy season, despite a peace agreement reached in Birnin Gwari district in late 2024.

Last month, at least six farmers were killed and 20 others abducted in another attack in the same district.
