BEIJING: China has warned that growing strategic and economic cooperation between India and Japan should not target Beijing or harm the interests of third parties. The statement follows high-level bilateral talks in New Delhi aimed at securing supply chains for critical minerals used in advanced technologies.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japan's Sanae Takaichi agreed to strengthen resilience across vital sectors, including semiconductors, quantum technologies, and critical minerals.
In response, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun urged nations to foster mutual trust rather than forming exclusive cliques or stoking regional confrontation.
Tensions have simmered since Takaichi previously suggested potential Japanese military involvement if Taiwan were attacked. Beijing responded to those friction points in part by restricting flows of rare earths to Japan, a sector that China globally dominates.
During the talks, Takaichi warned against the ‘weaponisation of the economy’ and non-market practices. Further straining ties, China added 20 Japanese entities to an export blacklist this week. Japan heavily criticized the blacklisting, calling it completely unacceptable and demanding an immediate reversal.
