Saipan : Residents of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands rushed to secure homes and stock up on supplies as Typhoon Bavi intensified into a super typhoon and headed toward the US Pacific territories.

The storm, carrying sustained winds of around 259 km/h and stronger gusts, is expected to bring dangerous conditions to the Mariana Islands by Monday. US weather authorities warned residents to prepare for at least tropical storm-force winds and heavy rain.

The approaching storm comes just months after Super Typhoon Sinlaku devastated parts of the region, leaving many communities still recovering. Residents have been boarding up windows, purchasing emergency supplies and preparing for possible power outages and flooding.

Forecasters said Bavi could become one of the strongest storms of the year as it moves across the western Pacific, raising concerns of further damage in areas already struggling to recover from previous disasters.
