Asian Airlines Lose Europe Travel Boost as Gulf Carriers Recover

Hong Kong/Sydney: Asian airlines are seeing a decline in the surge of passengers and higher fares they enjoyed on Europe-bound routes as Gulf carriers restore services and attract travellers back with lower ticket prices following disruptions caused by the Iran conflict.

Carriers including Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air and ANA had gained market share after flights through major Gulf hubs were disrupted by the conflict. However, airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad have resumed about 90% of their normal operations, helping them reclaim passengers.

Industry data shows the shift has been gradual rather than sudden. Passenger demand on non-stop flights between Asia and Europe remained above last year's levels, but growth slowed significantly between March and May. Load factors on European routes have also eased for several Asian airlines as competition returns.

Travel agents said many passengers who had temporarily switched to Asian carriers are now regaining confidence in flying through the Middle East, especially after travel advisories were eased in some countries. Analysts expect Gulf airlines to continue recovering lost market share, although Asian carriers are still likely to benefit from strong long-haul bookings in the coming months.
