Severe Heat Wave Grips US During 250th Birthday Celebrations

Washington DC: A dangerous heat wave is expected to sweep across much of the United States beginning Tuesday, bringing extreme temperatures over 100°F (38°C) just as the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday. The National Weather Service warned on Monday that high humidity will push heat indexes even higher across the central and eastern regions.
This severe weather system will last through the July 4 holiday weekend. Overnight cooling will remain heavily limited, with many areas seeing lows only in the mid- to upper-70s, which significantly increases the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Public alert systems in Washington have urged residents to drink water often, limit afternoon outdoor time, and check on neighbors. Despite the oppressive weather, the capital will still host what organizers claim will be the largest fireworks display in history to mark independence from Britain.
Concurrently, the World Cup has entered its knockout stages, meaning several soccer matches are scheduled to take place under these sweltering conditions. Globally, more frequent and intense heat waves remain clear indicators of climate change, which recently hit Europe hard.
