Floods Paralyse Ghana's Capital and Kill Three People

Accra: Torrential rains sparked devastating floods across Ghana's capital of Accra on Monday, killing at least three people and causing widespread paralysis.

The severe weather system dumped 140 millimetres of rain on the metropolitan area in a single day, marking the highest volume recorded in several years.

President John Mahama attributed the worsening disaster to a combination of changing climatic conditions and human behavior. He noted that rapid urbanization, building on waterways, and a distinct lack of drainage infrastructure investment have severely exacerbated the city's seasonal flooding problems.

The emergency triggered urgent rescue operations across the city of five million residents. In the eastern suburb of Tse Addo, emergency teams used boats to save fifteen children and an infant. Meanwhile, fatalities included a man in his 60s in the Alajo district and two people electrocuted by rising waters inside their home.

The Ministry of the Interior has urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel while police, military, and firefighters assist stranded residents.

Furthermore, the Ghana Meteorological Agency warned that persisting rain clouds could trigger additional flooding across the region later in the day.
