A multi-million dinar cleaning contract in Bahrain's Northern Governorate is under scrutiny after complaints about damaged and outdated household waste bins in residential areas.
Northern Municipal Council member Abdulla Mubarak said many bins in his constituency are cracked, dented or overused, with residents still waiting for proper replacements despite earlier assurances.
He questioned whether the cleaning contractor is fulfilling its obligations under the BD202.9 million, seven-year waste management agreement running from 2024 to 2030.
Concerns were also raised over uneven distribution of bins between neighbourhoods, with some smaller areas reportedly receiving more containers than larger residential zones.
Mubarak called for clearer accountability from the municipality and the contractor, stressing that residents should not receive relocated old bins in place of new replacements.
He urged authorities to conduct field inspections, review affected areas and set a clear timetable for proper bin replacement across the governorate.
