Washington : US authorities have detected more than 1,100 drones around FIFA World Cup venues and related sites, with over 300 successfully neutralised as part of extensive security measures for the tournament.
FBI officials said 1,139 drone detections had been recorded by Sunday night. More than 500 drones have also been seized as evidence for ongoing investigations.
The United States has made counter-drone operations a key part of security for the 48-team FIFA World Cup, investing hundreds of millions of dollars to strengthen detection and response capabilities. Local authorities in the 11 US host cities have been given expanded powers to jam and intercept drones, while dozens of police officers have received specialised FBI training.
Earlier this month, the FBI said it had foiled a suspected drone attack targeting a mixed martial arts event at the White House, where explosives were allegedly planned to be carried by drones.
For comparison, French authorities recorded more than 350 unauthorised drone flights during the 2024 Paris Olympics, resulting in 81 arrests.
