Tokyo : Passengers travelling on Japan's famous Shinkansen bullet trains will soon be able to book private luxury suites as rail operators introduce a new ‘Supreme Class’ service aimed at offering a more premium travel experience.
The new cabins, set to launch on October 1, will feature lockable doors, reclining seats, dedicated Wi-Fi, air conditioning and adjustable lighting. Designed to provide greater privacy and comfort, the suites are similar to first-class airline cabins.
The service will initially be available on around 12 trains a day, with the number expected to increase to 30 by the end of the year. Rail operators Central Japan Railway (JR Central) and West Japan Railway (JR West) plan to expand the service to around 30 per cent of Tokaido Shinkansen trains by the end of 2028.
Two types of private suites will be offered. A larger compartment, designed for up to two passengers, will include a sofa and extra space, while a smaller cabin will cater to solo travellers.
On the Nozomi Shinkansen route between Tokyo and Nagoya, the single-passenger suite will cost ¥32,440 for a one-way journey, while the larger two-person compartment will be priced at ¥47,060. A second passenger travelling in the larger suite will also need to purchase a basic fare ticket and a limited express ticket.
