Since June 21, more than 1,300 people have died as a result of the ongoing heatwave in Europe, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), with Germany setting a new national temperature record of 41.7 degrees.

According to the WHO, the extended duration of high heat has disproportionately impacted older persons and vulnerable communities, with France reporting over 1,000 excess deaths. Several countries, including Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary, have experienced record-breaking temperatures.

Health authorities have warned that hospitals are becoming increasingly crowded, while wildfires, transport disruptions and power outages have been recorded across the continent.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, condemned high heat as a ‘silent killer’ and warned that Europe is warming twice as fast as the world average, increasing the frequency and intensity of severe heatwaves.

Authorities across Europe have encouraged residents to avoid extended sun exposure, stay hydrated, and keep an eye on the elderly and vulnerable as the heatwave continues.
