Geneva: The UN human rights chief has urged for fast, impartial investigations into the deaths of persons held in US immigration custody, raising concerns about detention conditions and the treatment of migrants.

In a statement issued Friday, the United Nations urged US authorities to guarantee accountability for every death in jail and to adhere to international human rights standards. The rights office also expressed worry about claims of insufficient medical care, lengthy confinement, and overcrowding in some facilities.

The call comes as the US immigration detention system faces increased scrutiny following numerous deaths this year. The UN emphasised the importance of treating all detainees with respect and providing timely access to healthcare and legal rights.

The safety and welfare of detainees continue to be a top priority, according to US officials, who also stated that fatalities in custody are examined in accordance with established protocols. However, the UN stressed that in order to determine the circumstances surrounding each death and stop such instances in the future, open and impartial investigations are crucial.
