Doha: Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi said on Monday that 13 people were killed and 66 others injured in a gas plant explosion that occurred a night earlier, stressing that the incident was an accident and will not affect the country’s energy exports.

Addressing reporters, al-Kaabi said the victims included workers of Indian and Pakistani nationalities. He added that the injured are receiving medical treatment and confirmed that none of the cases are currently life-threatening.

“I find myself today having to do something I have always hoped will never happen, and that is to announce the tragic loss of 13 lives of our people who hold Indian and Pakistani nationalities,” he said.

The minister also confirmed that 66 people were injured and are being treated in hospital.

No impact on energy exports

Al-Kaabi emphasised that the explosion will not disrupt Qatar’s export commitments, particularly in the global gas market.

“This will not affect in any way our exports to the world,” he said, adding that early assessments indicate the incident was accidental and not the result of sabotage or any hostile act.
