US-Iran Deal Extends Ceasefire, Opens Door to Oil Exports and Peace Talks

Washington: The United States and Iran have reached an interim agreement that extends their fragile ceasefire by 60 days, allowing both sides more time to negotiate a permanent end to the conflict.

Under the agreement, Iran will be allowed to resume oil exports immediately, while the United States will lift its blockade of Iranian ports. Tehran has also agreed to restore maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route disrupted during the war.

US President Donald Trump said the deal guarantees that Iran will not obtain a nuclear weapon, while Iranian officials maintain that their nuclear programme is intended for peaceful purposes.

The agreement comes after months of fighting that has killed more than 7,000 people across the region, mainly in Iran and Lebanon. It also raises the prospect of broader economic relief for Iran, including potential sanctions easing, access to frozen assets and reconstruction funding if future negotiations succeed.

However, major issues remain unresolved, including the future of Iran's nuclear programme, regional security concerns and Israel's position. Negotiators are expected to use the next 60 days to seek a longer-term peace settlement.
