LONDON: UK Defence Secretary John Healey has unexpectedly resigned from the cabinet, delivering a severe blow to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government amid an escalating row over military funding.
In a scathing resignation letter, Healey accused Starmer of being unable, and the Treasury unwilling, to commit the critical resources required to protect the nation at a time of rising global threats.
The high-profile departure centers on fierce disagreements over the long-delayed Defence Investment Plan (DIP). Healey stated that the Treasury's final financial settlement backloads essential funding until after 2030, failing to address the immediate operational pressures and necessary combat readiness needed over the next two years.
Healey, who has managed Britain's defense strategy since Labour took office in July 2024, argued that the constrained budget would fundamentally reduce military readiness and compromise national security, leaving him with no other option but to step down.
