TAIPEI: Taiwan’s military conducted its first live-fire test of U.S.-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) on Wednesday, launching rockets into the waters of the Taiwan Strait.

The exercise, held along Taiwan’s western coast in Taichung, marked a significant escalation in defensive maneuvers aimed directly toward the Chinese mainland.

The drill featured ‘shoot-and-scoot’ tactics, where mobile units maneuvered into position and launched rockets within three minutes before relocating to avoid counter-fire.

Military officials stated the demonstration was designed to test rapid deployment and precision-strike capabilities against a simulated invasion. Sgt. Wang Ming-hui emphasized that the training reflects Taiwan’s unwavering determination to protect the island against current enemy threats.

While HIMARS systems have been tested previously, this event was the first instance of rockets being fired into the strategic waters separating the two territories. The deployment is part of a U.S.-encouraged asymmetric defense strategy intended to enhance Taiwan’s battlefield survivability.
