Damascus: Following a cyberattack that resulted in a leak of confidential foreign ministry documents that went viral online, Syria has launched an investigation.
Authorities reportedly started an official investigation into the breach after confidential files from Syria's Foreign Ministry were posted on a Telegram channel named ‘Syrian foreign ministry leaks.’ The majority of the documents from the post-Assad transitional era after 2024 are said to include diplomatic correspondence between embassies, information on Syrian expatriates, and internal administrative data such as staff details.
The ministry announced that it has begun ‘taking the necessary measures to verify and investigate the leaked documents’ and will carry out a detailed inquiry to figure out the cause, scope, and culprits of the breach. Also, officials said that efforts are being made to tighten information security systems and minimise the damage.
The incident corresponds with increasing fears about cybersecurity flaws impacting Syrian government institutions, which have recently experienced many cyberattacks. Authorities have responded by saying they are creating new legal frameworks and strengthening cybersecurity procedures to stop such attacks in the future.
The inquiry is still in progress and no group has yet taken responsibility for the cyberattack.
