Frisco: A Texas court sentenced a teenager to 35 years in prison for fatally stabbing another student at a high school track meet, putting to an end a case that gained national attention and sparked heated public debate.

The defendant, Karmelo Anthony who is now 19, was found guilty of murdering 17 years old Austin Metcalf, following an argument during a track and field meet in Frisco in April 2025. Prosecutors said the argument started when the victim ordered the boy to leave an area reserved for his school's athletes.

According to prosecution testimony, the confrontation quickly turned into a physical fight before the victim was stabbed in the chest. The defence claimed that the teenager acted in defence of himself, but judges disagreed and found him guilty of murder.

Members of Metcalf's family discussed the lasting impacts of the teen's death during the sentence hearing, while the defence requested mercy, claiming the incident was not premeditated. One of the highest punishments possible in this case, a 35 years of prison sentence, was ultimately issued by the jury.

Supporters of both families kept a close eye on the trial after the death stunned the neighbourhood and sparked intense debate on social media. The verdict, according to the prosecution, provided justice for the victim's family and highlighted the seriousness of the crime.
