Germany to create AI safety agency

BERLIN: The German government has officially announced plans to establish a dedicated national institute for the safety of artificial intelligence to analyze the performance and security risks of advanced AI models.
The decision was formalized following a National Security Council assessment concerning the significant implications of frontier AI models on Germany’s cybersecurity infrastructure.
To maximize efficiency, the newly formed institute will leverage existing bureaucratic structures alongside technical expertise from both the Federal Network Agency and the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). It will place a dual focus on general AI security and operational cybersecurity.
With this initiative, Germany aligns its regulatory oversight with other leading global nations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and France that have established independent AI safety bodies to evaluate emerging technological risks.
