Riyadh/Washington

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sought US support from President Donald Trump as Saudi Arabia faces an escalating threat from Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis in the Red Sea.

Trump did not agree to direct US strikes against the Houthis, but Washington offered intelligence-sharing and targeting assistance, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

The appeal came as Houthi forces advanced along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and reached Perim island near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, raising concerns over a key global shipping and energy route.

US Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper also travelled to Saudi Arabia for talks, underscoring growing US-Saudi coordination as regional tensions intensify.

Saudi Arabia had previously indicated it could confront the Houthis independently, while urging Washington to increase pressure on Iran.
