Prague: A Chinese national accused of carrying out activities on behalf of a foreign power will stand trial in the Czech Republic, marking the latest case to heighten concerns over Chinese influence and intelligence operations in the country.
The man, who has been in custody since January, is charged with conducting unauthorised activities for a foreign power. Czech authorities have not released further details about the case or announced a trial date.
Local media reported that the accused worked as the Prague correspondent for a newspaper linked to China's ruling Communist Party. In that role, he reportedly met Czech and Slovak officials and sought to obtain information from them.
If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.
The case comes amid growing scrutiny of China's activities in the Czech Republic. The country's intelligence service has repeatedly identified China as a security concern, alleging that Chinese operatives have sought to build ties with political figures and promote Beijing's interests.
Relations between Prague and Beijing have also been strained by cyber security disputes and growing Czech engagement with Taiwan. Czech officials have previously accused China-linked hackers of targeting government networks, while recent visits by senior Czech politicians to Taiwan have drawn criticism from Beijing.
