Bolivia Defense Minister Resigns as Anti-Government Protests Continue

La Paz : Bolivia's defense minister has resigned amid weeks of anti-government protests that have increased pressure on President Rodrigo Paz and his administration.

The resignation marks the highest-profile departure since Paz took office in November. Other cabinet members have also stepped down as the government moves to reorganise its leadership in response to the unrest.

The protests, led by labour groups and supporters of former president Evo Morales, began over economic concerns and have expanded into road blockades that have disrupted transport and trade around La Paz and El Alto.

Demonstrators are demanding action on rising living costs and have called for Paz to resign, while the government has rejected those demands and is considering emergency measures to restore order.

The unrest comes as Bolivia continues to grapple with fuel shortages, declining foreign currency reserves and broader economic challenges.
