France's Macron says 'nothing justifies' south Lebanon escalation

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron declared Sunday that ‘nothing justifies’ the major escalation underway in south Lebanon following a new offensive by Israeli forces against Hezbollah.
At France’s request, the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday after the Israeli military expanded its operations and seized the medieval Beaufort castle in southern Lebanon.
Macron emphasized that reaching a rapid agreement between the United States and Iran is ‘essential’ for regional stability, and that it must begin with a permanent ceasefire in Lebanon.
The French leader held urgent discussions with regional heads of state, including those of Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE, and Egypt. Beyond a Lebanese ceasefire, Macron called for the unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and urged broader negotiations regarding nuclear and ballistic programs.
