Sinaloa: Violent clashes between rival gang factions erupted overnight inside a prison in northwestern Mexico, leaving at least seven inmates dead. The riot took place at a detention facility in Culiacan, the capital city of Sinaloa state, an area heavily controlled by the powerful drug cartel of the same name.

The state security ministry confirmed that the fatal altercation involved rival factions loyal to the jailed co-founders of the Sinaloa cartel, Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman and Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada. Internal warfare between these specific groups has claimed more than 1,000 lives across the region since 2024.

While authorities have not identified the immediate trigger for the outbreak, order has been officially restored at the facility. State and federal police have launched an exhaustive search of the complex, and all standard family visits remain temporarily suspended.
