Washington DC: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed Thursday that his department has already prepared prototypes for a new $250 bill featuring President Donald Trump's portrait.

The specialized banknote is being proposed to commemorate the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence.

However, Bessent emphasized that the Treasury will ‘stick to the law’ as issuing the currency requires Congress to amend a longstanding 1866 federal statute that strictly prohibits living individuals from appearing on US tender. The proactive design phase followed legislation introduced by South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson.

The plan has already sparked intense political friction and internal controversy. Reports revealed that the former head of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing was reassigned after objecting to the design's legal and procedural hurdles. Meanwhile, top House Democrats immediately derided the proposal as a vanity project, pledging a ‘hard no’ to the bill.
