OpenAI's Altman says AI unlikely to lead to 'jobs apocalypse'

SYDNEY: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced Tuesday that the rapid global expansion of artificial intelligence is highly unlikely to trigger a ‘jobs apocalypse,’ walking back his previous warnings regarding immediate white-collar displacement.

Speaking virtually at a Commonwealth Bank of Australia conference, Altman openly admitted he was ‘delighted to be wrong' about his initial economic projections.

He acknowledged that his intuition was off, as he previously assumed a substantial number of entry-level white-collar roles would have been entirely eliminated by this stage of technological adoption.

Altman explained that real-world testing exposed a critical limitation of the technology: the irreplaceable value of genuine human interaction.

While banking and tech giants like HSBC and Amazon proceed with automated restructuring, Altman concluded that the deeply social elements of corporate communication and daily workplace collaboration ensure human labor remains vital to the global economy.
