Washington DC: A catastrophic industrial accident at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility in Washington state has left one person dead and nine others missing after a massive chemical storage tank collapsed Tuesday morning.
The 1.5 million-gallon tank reportedly imploded while workers were performing maintenance and cleaning duties. The structure contained ‘black liquor,’ a highly caustic chemical byproduct used in the paper-pulping process.
Cowlitz County emergency officials confirmed that the deceased was a contractor on-site, while search-and-rescue teams continue to scour the wreckage for the nine individuals still unaccounted for.
Search efforts are currently hindered by structural instability and hazardous material spills across the facility. State safety regulators have launched a formal investigation into the tank's structural integrity and the protocols followed during the maintenance operation. The mill remains closed as recovery operations intensify.
