Bangkok: A sexual abuse allegation involving a member of one of Thailand’s richest beer brewing families has triggered a wider public conversation in the country, with survivors of unrelated abuse also coming forward with their own stories.
The case centres on Siranudh Scott, a fourth-generation member of the family behind the Singha beer brand, who recently posted a video accusing his elder brother of repeated sexual abuse during his childhood. The accused brother has denied the allegations.
Following the claims, the family’s parent company dismissed the brother from his executive role and said it would cooperate with any investigation. The company has not commented further on the case.
Siranudh later said the alleged abuse took place over several years while he was a child and that he had previously remained silent after receiving compensation within the family. He said he decided to speak publicly after a separate family legal dispute became a breaking point.
The case has gained widespread attention in Thailand, where social stigma and cultural pressures often discourage victims of sexual violence from speaking out. Since the allegations surfaced, several public figures and social media users have shared their own experiences of abuse, contributing to a broader national discussion on accountability and victim support.
Experts say the reaction is unusual for Thailand, a society where family reputation and social hierarchy often limit public disclosures of abuse. However, they also note that changing attitudes among younger generations and the influence of social media are slowly creating more space for survivors to speak.
The brewing family involved is among Thailand’s wealthiest business dynasties, but Siranudh has publicly distanced himself from the company. He has also said that speaking out has helped him begin to heal and that he hopes his case encourages others to come forward.
The accused brother continues to deny the allegations, while the company has stated it will comply with legal processes if required.
