Paris: French authorities are conducting investigations into allegations of violence, sexual assault, and rape involving school monitors at over 100 public educational and childcare facilities in Paris, in a scandal that has sparked national protests and renewed scrutiny of child safety measures.

Paris prosecutors revealed that investigations are in progress in 84 preschools, 20 primary schools and 10 nursery institutions. The claims concern non-teaching staff in charge of supervising children during lunch breaks, nap times, and after-school activities, with some cases involving children as young as three years old.

Lawyers representing affected families claim that frequent complaints and warning signs were not properly addressed, letting some accused staff members to continue working with children. Parents' groups have accused authorities of failing to provide adequate background checks and supervision procedures.

The incident has sparked a strong response from city officials. This year, Paris authorities have suspended 78 school monitors, 31 of whom are facing sexual assault allegations. Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire has announced a €20 million reform package to improve recruitment standards, staff training, monitoring, and reporting methods.

Advocacy groups have called for increased accountability, transparency, and systemic changes to stop future abuse following the findings, which have sparked a wider discussion about child safety in schools and after-school programs in France.
