Nuuk: Hundreds of demonstrators marched through Greenland's capital of Nuuk to protest the grand opening of a new U.S. consulate.

Waving national flags and carrying signs reading ‘USA Asu’ (Stop USA), the crowd chanted ‘go home’ and ‘Greenland belongs to Greenlanders.’ Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen joined other prominent local politicians in actively boycotting the official opening ceremony.

Public anger boiled over after Jeff Landry, President Donald Trump's special envoy to Greenland, stated it was time for Washington ‘to put its footprint back on Greenland,’ claiming the island needs the U.S. to scale up national security operations and repopulate specific military bases.

Despite the intense public hostility outside the new downtown high-rise, U.S. officials defended the expansion from a modest suburban building as a long-term commitment.

While Prime Minister Nielsen firmly reiterated that the semi-autonomous territory is strictly not for sale, he acknowledged Greenland must still navigate its defense relationship with the United States.
