Trump Says Iran Will Not Obtain Nuclear Weapon

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Iran would not be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon, stressing that the United States would prevent Tehran from retaining highly enriched uranium.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said Washington was continuing negotiations with Iran but insisted the outcome would ensure the Islamic Republic could not maintain its enriched uranium stockpile.

“No. We will get it. We don't need it. We don't want it,” Trump said when asked whether Iran could keep its highly enriched uranium.

“We’ll probably destroy it after we get it — but we’re not going to let them have it,” he added.

Trump said the United States was pursuing diplomatic efforts but warned that Washington would achieve its objective regardless of the path taken.

“Right now, we’re negotiating, and we’ll see, but we’re going to get it one way or the other,” he said. “They’re not going to have a nuclear weapon.”

The remarks come amid ongoing international concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme and continued efforts by world powers to address Tehran’s uranium enrichment activities.
