MADRID: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has declared his full support for his predecessor, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who has become the target of a preliminary corruption investigation.
Speaking at a press conference, Sanchez defended the former prime minister's integrity, dismissing the allegations as politically motivated attacks aimed at destabilizing the government and damaging the ruling party's reputation.
The judicial inquiry began after a local anti-corruption group filed a complaint accusing Zapatero of illicit financial dealings during his time in office. The court agreed to examine the claims to determine if there is sufficient evidence to launch a formal criminal trial against the former leader.
Sanchez strongly criticized the opposition parties for exploiting the legal probe for political leverage, urging the public to respect the presumption of innocence.
The prime minister concluded that the administration remains focused on its legislative agenda while cooperating fully with judicial authorities to ensure transparency.
