The United Arab Emirates has inaugurated the “Sail” building, the new headquarters of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, in the Al Jaddaf area of Dubai, describing it as the world’s tallest, largest and smartest net-zero energy government building.

The landmark structure, is designed to operate as a fully integrated smart facility, relying on advanced digital systems and renewable energy to minimise environmental impact.

Officials said the building is equipped with around 110,000 smart sensors, more than 1,500 wireless access points and 3,200 network devices. Together, these systems generate over 1.9 million automated control commands each day, enabling real-time monitoring and management of operations.

The headquarters also features solar power systems with a total generation capacity of five megawatts, produced across two main photovoltaic installations.

Authorities said the project reflects the UAE’s broader strategy to position itself at the forefront of sustainability, clean energy and smart infrastructure development.

They added that the “Sail” building is intended as a global architectural and technological benchmark, combining energy efficiency with advanced digital systems in what they described as a model for future government facilities.

The UAE continues to invest heavily in renewable energy and smart city initiatives as part of its long-term economic diversification and climate commitments.
