Seoul: In an effort to identify the culprit and the type of weapon used in the attack on the South Korean-owned cargo ship HMM Namu in the Strait of Hormuz, South Korea announced on Friday that it will carry out a forensic inquiry into the debris recovered from the incident.
According to Seoul's foreign ministry, the debris, which is thought to be pieces of unknown flying objects that hit the ship earlier this month, arrived in South Korea from Dubai for technical examination.
On May 4, when anchored off the United Arab Emirates, the HMM Namu suffered significant damage close to its stern, which caused it to catch fire. According to earlier reports from South Korean authorities, the damaged area was around 5 meters broad and 7 meters deep.
Seoul is looking into U.S. intelligence on the issue and has sent technical experts to Dubai. Although Tehran has denied involvement, a top South Korean official stated last week that it was unlikely that anyone other than Iran was at blame.
One of the most significant oil shipping lanes in the world, the Strait of Hormuz, was the centre of numerous maritime security incidents and increased tensions at the time of the attack.
