DENVER:Authorities have determined that a man who was fatally struck by a commercial aircraft on a runway at Denver International Airport on Monday night intended to take his own life, according to official investigative reports released Tuesday.
The incident occurred late Monday evening when a departing flight struck a person on one of the airport's active runways. Emergency responders and airport security arrived on the scene shortly after the pilot reported an unusual impact during the takeoff roll. The victim, whose identity is being withheld pending full family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner, in coordination with airport police, conducted an initial investigation that pointed toward intentionality. Officials stated that the individual had gained unauthorized access to the airfield shortly before the incident.
‘Based on evidence gathered at the scene and statements from the preliminary investigation, this has been ruled a suicide,’ a spokesperson for the authorities confirmed.
The security breach raised immediate questions regarding airfield perimeters. Federal investigators are now reviewing how the individual managed to bypass multiple layers of security to reach the secure tarmac area. While the airport remained operational, the specific runway was closed for several hours as investigators processed the scene and cleared debris.
Safety officials noted that while runway incursions are rare, a breach of this nature involving a fatality is an extreme security event. The Federal Aviation Administration (sFAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified, as per standard protocol for incidents involving commercial aircraft.
