BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged Pakistan to intensify its mediation efforts between Iran and the United States, calling for a ‘proper’ resolution to the ongoing conflict and the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
In a high-stakes telephone conversation on Tuesday, Wang spoke with his Pakistani counterpart, Ishaq Dar, ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s landmark visit to Beijing.
Wang commended Pakistan’s role in facilitating a two-week ceasefire on April 8 and praised Islamabad for its "constructive" role in hosting direct talks between Tehran and Washington.
The appeal comes as global energy supplies remain disrupted by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage for international oil trade. While Pakistan has rejected reports that it is shielding Iranian military assets, the U.S. has expressed growing skepticism regarding Islamabad's neutrality.
Despite these tensions, China reiterated its ironclad support for Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives, stressing that a durable ceasefire is the only path toward regional stability and global economic recovery.
