Paris: French security forces have disrupted a significant terror plot involving a 27-year-old Tunisian man suspected of planning a violent jihadist-inspired action in the heart of Paris. The suspect, who arrived in France in 2022 via the Italian island of Lampedusa, was arrested on May 7 following a swift preliminary investigation into ‘terrorist criminal conspiracy’. On Monday, the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) confirmed that the individual has been placed in pre-trial detention as the probe intensifies.

The investigation revealed that the suspect had identified high-profile targets, specifically aiming to strike a Paris museum and members of the Jewish community. Reports from Le Monde and Le Parisien indicate that the Louvre Museum was a primary point of interest, along with the Jewish community residing in the capital’s 16th arrondissement. Beyond domestic targets, authorities discovered that the man was also contemplating a journey to join the ranks of the Islamic State in either Syria or Mozambique.

Evidence recovered from the suspect's cellphone provided a chilling look into his radicalization and preparations. Analysts found hundreds of photos of firearms and knives, jihadist propaganda videos, and a social media profile picture depicting an IS fighter executing prisoners.

‘Most notably, the suspect reportedly used ChatGPT to search for ‘how to make a bomb,’ highlighting a modern technological dimension to the threat. This arrest occurs against a backdrop of heightened vigilance in France, which has seen a resurgence in thwarted plots and jihadist violence over the past year.
