Brazil's Lula to meet Trump on Thursday

Washington DC: President Donald Trump will host Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for a high-stakes working visit this Thursday.

The meeting, confirmed by White House officials, marks only the second face-to-face encounter between the two leaders, who have historically maintained a rocky relationship.

The 80-year-old Lula and 79-year-old Trump remain ideologically polarized on critical global issues, including international trade, climate change, and multilateralism.

Despite a slight thawing of relations following their first meeting in Malaysia last year which resulted in the removal of punitive U.S. tariffs on Brazil, significant friction remains. Lula has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration's foreign policy, particularly concerning the war in Iran and the ouster of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela.

Domestic politics also loom large over the visit, as Trump remains a staunch ally of Lula's predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, while Bolsonaro’s son is currently positioned as Lula’s primary rival in Brazil's upcoming October election.
