Cambodian PM's cousin says owned 30% of scam-linked firm

Phnom Penh: An investigation has revealed that a cousin of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet owned a multimillion-pound property in London through an offshore company.

The luxury apartment, located in an upscale neighborhood, was held by a shell entity registered in a tax haven, raising questions about the transparency of the ruling family’s wealth.

Financial records indicate the property was purchased for several million pounds, a figure that appears significantly higher than the official income of Cambodian government officials.

While the relative in question does not hold a formal government position, the proximity to the Prime Minister has sparked calls for greater scrutiny regarding ‘politically exposed persons’ and their international investments.

This disclosure comes amid increased global pressure on the UK to tighten its real estate registry laws. Anti-corruption advocates argue that such opaque ownership structures allow elite figures from developing nations to park wealth in stable Western markets, often shielding assets from domestic oversight.
