New Jersey: A United Airlines Boeing 767 arriving from Venice narrowly avoided disaster Sunday when it clipped a lamppost and a tractor-trailer while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The aircraft, carrying 231 passengers and crew, struck the objects on a highway near the runway around 2 p.m. local time.
According to New Jersey State Police, the plane’s landing tire and underside collided with the pole and truck, causing the pole to strike a nearby Jeep. While those on the plane were unhurt, the truck driver sustained minor injuries from shattered glass.
United Airlines has removed the crew from service pending a rigorous safety investigation, and the FAA is also investigating. Officials noted the outcome was fortunate, as the incident could have been far more severe.
