US sanctions are 'collective punishment,' says Cuba during May 1 marches

Havana: Cuba has condemned new sanctions imposed by US President Donald Trump as ‘collective punishment’ against its people. The measures, announced via executive order, target key sectors of the Cuban economy, including energy, mining, and financial services.

The announcement coincided with massive May 1 marches in Havana, where thousands gathered outside the US embassy to ‘defend the homeland’. The procession was led by President Miguel Diaz-Canel and former leader Raul Castro.

President Trump recently stated the US would be ‘taking over’ the island ‘almost immediately,’ further escalating regional tensions. Meanwhile, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez rejected the ‘illegal’ and ‘abusive’ unilateral measures.

The sanctions arrive as Cuba faces severe economic stagnation, fuel shortages, and power cuts following a January blockade. Despite April talks between senior officials, these new measures signal a significant shift away from diplomatic dialogue.

During the rally, Cuban authorities claimed to have collected over six million signatures supporting national peace and sovereignty.
