Mexico demands evidence behind US drug charges against governor

Mexico City: The Mexican government is demanding ‘irrefutable’ evidence from the United States following drug trafficking charges against Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya and nine other officials.
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that while Mexico will not protect anyone, solid proof is required to proceed with US extradition requests. She cautioned that without such evidence, the accusations could be viewed as politically motivated attacks against the Morena party.
The charges, which accuse the 76-year-old governor of collaborating with the Sinaloa cartel to distribute narcotics, have further strained diplomatic ties during sensitive free-trade negotiations. This tension follows the unauthorized presence of US agents in Mexico and subsequent criticism of Mexican corruption by the US ambassador.
While Rocha Moya denies the allegations, calling them an attack on his political movement, security analysts warn that Mexico holds less leverage than the US in the current geopolitical climate.
Regarding the Trump administration's pressure for military intervention against cartels, Sheinbaum remains open to intelligence sharing but continues to reject the deployment of US forces on Mexican soil.
