The UAE’s push for inclusivity has reached the toy aisle with the arrival of Mattel’s first-ever autistic Barbie. This milestone release aims to provide ‘representation for every child,’ ensuring that the neurodivergent community in the Emirates sees themselves reflected in a global icon.

Developed with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), the doll moves beyond aesthetics to incorporate functional features that mirror real-world experiences.

Unlike traditional dolls, this Barbie is equipped with flexible joints to mimic self-regulatory gestures and eyes that look slightly to the side, reflecting common sensory preferences within the community.

Local families have welcomed the move, noting that such toys help foster empathy and understanding from a young age. To further support the cause, Mattel has committed to donating 1,000 dolls to specialized pediatric hospitals, cementing the doll's role as both a plaything and a tool for social progress.
